El Libro de Oración Común de la Iglesia Episcopal explica algunas de las normas y propósitos para el Santo Matrimonio en nuestra iglesia:

“El matrimonio cristiano es un pacto solemne y público entre un hombre y una mujer en la presencia de Dios. En la Iglesia Episcopal se requiere que al menos uno de los cónyuges sea bautizado; que no menos de dos testigos presencien la ceremonia; y que el matrimonio esté de acuerdo con las leyes del país y los cánones de esta Iglesia.” …

“Dios estableció en la creación el vínculo y pacto matrimonial, y nuestro Señor Jesucristo honró esta forma de vida con su presencia y su primer milagro en las bodas de Caná de Galilea. …Es la voluntad de Dios que la unión de esposo y esposa en corazón, cuerpo y mente sea para gozo mutuo; para la ayuda y el consuelo que cada uno se dé, tanto en la prosperidad como en la adversidad; y, cuando Dios lo disponga, para la procreación de los hijos y su formación en el conocimiento y amor del Señor. Por tanto, el matrimonio no debe emprenderse inconsiderada o ligeramente, sino con reverencia, deliberación y de acuerdo con los propósitos para los cuales Dios lo instituyó.”

En Estados Unidos, no existe la separación o diferencia entre casarse “por lo civil” y “por la iglesia” que existe en otros muchos países.  Siempre y cuando se obtiene la licencia por el condado dentro de 60 días antes de la boda (para matrimonios en el Condado de Cook, estado de Illinois), una pareja se puede casar en la iglesia y al mismo tiempo es casado por la ley civil.  Es importante asegurar que la iglesia y el/la sacerdote estén disponibles antes de fijar o anunciar cualquier fecha.  

En Santa Teresa de Ávila, las parejas que se quieren casar deben reservar una fecha para el matrimonio con tres meses o más de anticipación.  Las personas deben ser miembros activos de la iglesia o deber reunirse con el sacerdote y asistir regularmente por lo menos por tres meses antes de la boda.  Otro requisito es asistir a tres sesiones de pláticas con el sacerdote, para prepararse espiritualmente y entender el significado del matrimonio cristiano tal como lo entiende nuestra iglesia.  La pareja y/o los padrinos deben dar una donación de $300 a esta iglesia, que incluye las pláticas, un ensayo, el boletín, y la misa; $100 de esta cantidad se debe entregar como depósito para reservar la fecha y el balance se debe entregar antes de comenzar la misa.

El servicio (misa) del Santo Matrimonio normalmente se realiza dentro de la iglesia y de acuerdo al rito en el Libro de Oración Común.  Se pueden incluir la mayoría de las tradiciones y costumbres tales como anillos, arras, lazo, velas, etc.  El sacerdote tendría que aprobar cualquier variación al rito, lecturas, sitio, etc. establecidos.  

The Book of Common Prayer of the Episcopal Church explains some of the guidelines and purposes for Holy Matrimony in our church:

“Christian marriage is a solemn and public covenant between a man and a woman in the presence of God.  In the Episcopal Church it is required that one, at least, of the parties must be a baptized Christian; that the ceremony be attested by at least two witnesses; and that the marriage conform to the laws of the State and the canons of this Church.” …

“The bond and covenant of marriage was established by God in creation, and our Lord Jesus Christ adorned this manner of life by his presence and first miracle at a wedding in Cana of Galilee.  …The union of husband and wife in heart, body, and mind is intended by God for their mutual joy; for the help and comfort given one another in prosperity and adversity; and, when it is God’s will, for the procreation of children and their nurture in the knowledge and love of the Lord.  Therefore marriage is not to be entered into unadvisedly or lightly, but reverently, deliberately, and in accordance with the purposes for which it was instituted by God.”

In the United States, a couple can be married in a church and have their legal, civil marriage at the same time, as long as the license is obtained from the county within the time limit (60 days before the wedding for Cook County, Illinois).  It is important to ensure that the church and priest are available before setting or announcing a date.

In Santa Teresa de Avila, couples who wish to marry should reserve a date for the wedding three or more months in advance.  They should be active members of the church or should meet with the priest and attend regularly for at least three months before the wedding.  Another requirement is to attend three premarital conversation sessions with the priest, to prepare spiritually and to understand the meaning of Christian marriage as our church understands it.  The couple and/or the sponsors should give a donation of $300 to this church, which includes the premarital sessions, a rehearsal, the bulletin, and the service (mass); $100 of this amount should be given as a deposit to reserve a date and the balance should be given before the service.

The service (mass) of Holy Matrimony normally is held within the church building (sanctuary) in accordance with the rite in the Book of Common Prayer.  Most cultural traditions such as exchange of rings, candles, coins, etc. can be included.  The priest would need to approve any variation in the established rite, readings, location, etc.
